Today it’s time to brush on your curtsy an meet the fantabulous Pearl Grey!
Why did you start performing?
I saw a burlesque performer at a New Years gig once, and I just thought “I HAVE to do that!”
Do you remember your first time on stage? How did that go?
Oh yes! It was at the late Madame Jo Jos (R.I.P) and it was for the Cheek of It Beginners troupe. We performed a fun Christmas routine. My first time performing as a fully fledged solo performer was part of a corporate fashion event in the most amazing venue. I particularly enjoyed hanging out with the male models backstage!
Of all of your acts, which is your favourite to perform?
Queenie. I can’t explain why – I guess shes the one I am most associated with, and there is that unexpected twist halfway through, which always manages to surprise people!
What sets you apart from other performers?
Tough one! I was chatting with a good friend about what makes Pearl ‘Pearl’ and it’s that inner child of ‘me’ (Kate) which I always try and make time and space for in my life. She manifests in Pearl through my sense of humour. Plus I like to revisit my childhood through burlesque by creating acts based on my favourite movies or icons when I was young; only I add my (slightly twisted) adult take on them as well!
What do you think is people’s first impression of you?
I dread to think!
What’s your favourite thing about cabaret?
Personally, it give me a space to play. It’s my adult playground for my childlike side.
How did you choose your stage name?
I love tea. And I’m English.
What’s your next challenge in life or in performing?
One day I’ll try and do that one thing that really terrifies me: Sexy ‘showgirl’ burlesque. But I keep putting it off!
